The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) announces the CLAT eligibility criteria for integrated LLB and LLM. Candidates must fulfill the eligibility criteria to appear in the CLAT exam.

A minimum of 45% is required to qualify for the exam. 5% relaxation is given to candidates of the reserved category. Candidates can complete the registration process through eligibility criteria; however, admissions are only given if they clear the university’s requirements during the admissions process.

CLAT 2025

NLUs will release CLAT 2025 application form tentatively in August 2024. The application form will be available at the official website. The exam will be conducted offline in December 2024. For the first time, CLAT will be as early as December instead of its usual time, i.e., the first week of May.

Academic Qualification

The candidate should have passed the 12th Board Exams or any equivalent examination with marks mentioned below:

  • UG Qualification: 45% marks for candidates belonging to Unreserved /OBC /Specially abled Persons (SAP) and other categories. 40% marks for SC/ST category. Candidates appearing in the 10+2 examination can also appear for this examination. However, they should be able to produce sufficient evidence to prove that they have passed 10+2 at the time of admission.
  • PG Qualification: LLB or equivalent degree in law examination with a minimum of 55% marks in General/OBC/SAP categories and 50% marks in the SC/ST category. Candidates appearing in the qualifying examination in April/May 2024 will also be eligible for the CLAT 2025 examination. However, they will be required to prove their passing the qualifying examination at the allotted National Law Universities.

CLAT Eligibility Criteria: Final Year Students

Here are some points that will help the final year students to clear any confusion about their eligibility for the CLAT exam:

  • Final year candidates must show proof of passing the qualifying examination at the time of admission, or their right to be considered for admission will be forfeited.
  • Candidates need to submit marksheet/ certificates of their passing with the required marks for admissions.

Age Criteria for appearing in the CLAT exam are given below. Candidate must check their eligibility before applying for the exam:

  • For candidates belonging to unreserved categories – 20 years
  • For candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Specially-abled Persons/Persons with disabilities (SAP/PWD) categories – 22 years

CLAT Score Tie Breaker

In case of a score tie between candidates, the following procedure and order are used by NLUs to break it:

  • CLAT 2024: UG Score Tie-breaker: Higher scores in legal aptitude subject, Older age, Computerized lotteries
  • CLAT 2024: PG Score Tie-breaker: Older age, Computerized lotteries

CLAT Eligibility: Important Points

Candidates who fail to meet the eligibility criteria of CLAT 2025 will be disqualified even if they have cleared the entrance exam. Hence, candidates must read the eligibility criteria as prescribed by the NLU Consortium. Candidates must secure the minimum required marks appearing in the qualifying exam (Class 12 for CLAT UG and final year of graduation for CLAT PG). Failing to secure the minimum prescribed marks in the qualifying examination will be disqualified from the CLAT admission process. Candidates must submit the marks obtained in the qualifying exam along with the mark sheet/certificate at the time of counselling. Otherwise, their admission will be cancelled. Candidates applying under the reserved or domicile category must submit the documents supporting their claim.
